Blue Planet, Red Planet: Exploring Planetary Science

On March 23, 2011 The Children's Museum opened Blue Planet, Red Planet: Exploring Planetary Science. Our former Explore Store has been transformed into a Mars experience that celebrates the history of exploration and the discoveries of the last fifty years. Our partner is this project is the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT) in East Hartford. The exhibit features

  • A timeline of Mars exploration history with video highlights of important discoveries,
  • Two motion-capture virtual reality simulators that bring guests on to the surface of Mars to see the geology, atmosphere, and potential water of the planet,
  • A multiple choice, electronic quiz that tests what has been learned in the exhibit, and
  • An outdoor greenhouse that houses student created planting experiments using “Mars soil” and Mars techniques.

For the next three years, the Museum will host monthly Mars Madness open houses so that guests can explore the exhibit and learn more about current and future Mars exploration projects. From 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm on these particular Wednesdays, Museum admission will be free for all guests.

The Blue Planet, Red Planet: Exploring Planetary Science exhibit is the first phase of a multi-year grant sponsored by NASA’s Competitive Program for Museums and Planetariums. Future initiatives include Teacher Professional Development opportunities and field trip modules for students in Grades 4 through 8.

Support for Blue Planet, Red Planet: Exploring Planetary Science at The Children's Museum is made possible under Grant No.NNX10AK13G with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
